Athletic Safety Update Newsletter Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Better know as PNF stretching, is stretching techniques that involves combinations of alternating contractions and stretches. A number of PNF techniques are used for stretching--- the slow-reversal-hold-relax, the contract-relax, and the hold-relax techniques. All three involve various combinations of alternating the contraction and relaxation of both the agonist and antagonist muscles. All techniques consist of a 5 or 10 sec. Pushing phase, followed by a 15 to 20 sec. Relaxation (stretching) phase.

An Example would be having a partner stretching your hamstring for 20 sec. (relaxation phase) followed by you contracting your hamstring against your partner for 10 sec. followed by contraction of the quadriceps while the hamstring is being stretching for 20 sec. this can be repeated up to three times. This is the slow- reversal-hold- relax technique.

ABSTRACT
The effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) on older adults is unknown and few studies have investigated the effects of age-related changes in muscle on joint range of motion (ROM). This study examined the effects of PNF stretch techniques on knee joint ROM and knee flexor electromyographic (EMG) activity in trained (T) and untrained (UT) older adults. Three PNF stretch techniques: static stretch (SS), contract-relax (CR), and agonist contract-relax (ACR) were applied to UT and T older adults aged 45-55 and 65-75 years. Results indicated that ACR produced 29-34% more ROM and 65-119% more EMG activity than CR and SS, respectively. The 65-75 UT group achieved 124% less knee joint ROM compared to 45-55 UT across all stretch
conditions. No significant differences between 45-55 T and 65-75 T were demonstrated indicating a training-related response to PNF stretch techniques. Lifetime training may counteract age-related declines in ROM.

DESCRIPTION
For years, PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching has been used in therapeutic settings. Now with Facilitated Stretching you can learn how to use PNF stretching techniques to increase range of motion in healthy athletes. Until now, the material available on PNF has been highly technical. Facilitated Stretching takes a simplified approach--it shows you the PNF techniques that are appropriate for healthy people, and it provides easy-to-follow instructions with photos and illustrations that make your learning easy. The stretches in Facilitated Stretching are known as CRAC (contract-relax, antagonist-contract) stretches. CRAC stretches are the safest PNF stretches because there is no passive movement--the athlete performs all of the stretching. Facilitated Stretching contains 29 CRAC stretches, which address most of the major muscle groups: 18 are single-muscle stretches, and 11 use the spiral-diagonal patterns that are the heart of PNF stretching. Once you've learned these stretching techniques, you'll be able to design additional stretches for almost any muscle or muscle group. The book also features many self-stretching techniques that athletes can use to maintain their gains in range of motion.
Facilitated Stretching includes a full chapter that explains the role of PNF techniques during injury rehabilitation. You'll learn the goals of PNF stretching in rehabilitation, some of the conditions and injuries that benefit from PNF stretching, and the modalities used in rehabilitating sport injuries. Range of motion is critical in athletic performance. Without it, athletes risk fatigue and overuse injuries. Help athletes achieve greater range of motion and improved performance with the techniques in Facilitated Stretching.
